Jinnō Shōtōki

1339 · 14th century

The Jinnō Shōtōki ('Chronicle of the Direct Descent of Gods and Sovereigns') is a history of Japan written by Kitabatake Chikafusa in 1339 and revised in 1343. Tracing the imperial line from the age of the gods, it argued that the Southern Court of Go-Daigo's descendants held the rightful succession. It became a classic of Japanese political thought and later inspired imperial loyalism.
