Kandake

Also known as kandakes

Kandake was the title of royal women, often queen mothers or ruling queens, in the kingdom of Kush. Several kandakes held significant political authority and some ruled in their own right. The title, rendered in Greek and Latin as Candace, reflects the prominent role of women in governance in the Kushite Empire.
