Person
Kenneth Kaunda
Kenneth Kaunda was the first president of Zambia, from independence in 1964 until 1991. Born at Lubwa mission in northern Zambia, he led the United National Independence Party in the campaign against the Central African Federation. He made Zambia a one-party state in 1972, nationalised the copper mines and supported liberation movements in southern Africa. Economic decline forced multiparty elections in 1991, which he lost to Frederick Chiluba.
