Lozi people

Also known as Lozi, Barotse, Luyi, Aluyana, Luyana

The Lozi, earlier called the Luyi or Aluyana, are a people of the upper Zambezi floodplain in western Zambia, whose kingdom of Barotseland was ruled by the Litunga. Their culture is shaped by the annual flood of the plain, marked by the Kuomboka ceremony. Conquered by the Kololo in the 1840s, they restored their kingdom in 1864, and their language, Silozi, contains many Sotho words from that period.
