Kerch Strait
The Kerch Strait, the Cimmerian Bosporus of the ancient Greeks, links the Black Sea with the Sea of Azov between Crimea and the Taman peninsula. From the 6th century BCE Greek colonies such as Panticapaeum and Phanagoria lined its shores, and around 480 BCE they united as the Bosporan Kingdom. The ancient name recalls the Cimmerians, a people whom the Greeks believed had once lived there.
