Kong, Côte d'Ivoire
Kong is a town in northern Côte d'Ivoire that grew from a Dyula trading town into the capital of the Kong Empire in the early 18th century. It was a centre of trade in gold, kola nuts and cloth and of Islamic learning, with mosques built in the Sudanese earthen style. Samori Touré destroyed the town in 1897, and its Great Mosque is part of a World Heritage Site.
