Kouloughlis

16th–19th century · 16th century · Also known as Kuloğlu

The Kouloughlis were the sons of Ottoman soldiers, mostly Janissaries, and local North African women in the Regencies of Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli. In Algiers they were gradually excluded from the Janissary corps and high office to preserve the power of soldiers recruited from Anatolia, and an attempted revolt in 1633 was crushed. Many settled in towns such as Tlemcen and served in auxiliary troops.
