Kuressaare

Also known as Arensburg

Kuressaare, in German Arensburg, is the main town of the island of Saaremaa in Estonia. Its well-preserved castle was built in the 14th century by the bishops of Ösel-Wiek and became their main stronghold. The town passed to Denmark in 1559, to Sweden in 1645 and to Russia in 1721, and later became a spa resort.
