Magnus, Duke of Holstein

1540–1583 · 16th century · Also known as Magnus of Livonia

Magnus, Duke of Holstein, was a younger brother of Frederick II of Denmark, who bought him the bishoprics of Ösel-Wiek and Courland in 1559. During the Livonian War Ivan IV of Russia proclaimed him King of Livonia in 1570 as a Russian vassal. His kingdom never controlled much territory, and after his death in 1583 Denmark sold its rights to Poland-Lithuania.
