Kurkh Monoliths

9th century BCE · 9th century BCE

The Kurkh Monoliths are two Assyrian stelae found in 1861 at Kurkh, near Diyarbakır in south-eastern Turkey, and now in the British Museum. One, of Shalmaneser III, describes his campaigns up to 853 BCE, including the Battle of Qarqar, and names 'Ahab the Israelite' with 2,000 chariots and 10,000 foot soldiers. The other records the campaigns of Ashurnasirpal II.
