La Muette de Portici

1828 · 19th century · Also known as The Mute Girl of Portici, Masaniello

La Muette de Portici is a French grand opera by Daniel Auber, first performed in Paris in 1828. Set during the Neapolitan revolt of Masaniello against Spanish rule in 1647, it includes the patriotic duet "Amour sacré de la patrie". A performance at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels on 25 August 1830 sparked the riots that began the Belgian Revolution.
