Louis VI of France

1081–1137 · 12th century · Also known as Louis the Fat, Louis VI the Fat

Louis VI, called the Fat, was king of France from 1108 to 1137. He strengthened royal authority in the Île-de-France by subduing rebellious castellans, aided by his adviser Abbot Suger of Saint-Denis. After the murder of Charles the Good in 1127 he imposed William Clito as count of Flanders, though the Flemish towns soon turned against him. He married his son Louis VII to Eleanor of Aquitaine.
