Madhvacharya

1238–1317 · 13th century · Also known as Madhva

Madhvacharya was a Hindu philosopher from near Udupi on the coast of Karnataka who founded the Dvaita, or dualist, school of Vedanta. Against Advaita, he taught that God, identified with Vishnu, is eternally distinct from souls and matter. He founded the Krishna temple at Udupi and its monasteries, which still lead his tradition. The dates 1238–1317 are traditional.
