Malatesta da Verucchio

1212–1312 · 13th century · Also known as Mastin Vecchio

Malatesta da Verucchio was the founder of the Malatesta lordship of Rimini. As leader of the city's Guelph party, he drove out the Ghibelline Parcitadi family in 1295 and ruled Rimini until his death at about a hundred. Dante called him the old mastiff in the Inferno; his son Gianciotto killed his wife Francesca da Rimini and brother Paolo.
