Maniakh

fl. 568 · 6th century

Maniakh was a Sogdian merchant and diplomat in the service of the Turkic Khaganate. In 568 he led the first Türk embassy to the Byzantine emperor Justin II at Constantinople, proposing an alliance against the Sasanian Empire and direct trade in silk that would bypass Persia. His mission, described by the Byzantine historian Menander Protector, opened two decades of Byzantine-Turkic diplomacy.
