Marfa Boretskaya
Marfa Boretskaya was a wealthy Novgorod noblewoman, widow of the posadnik Isaak Boretsky, who led the party opposed to Moscow. In 1470–1471 her faction sought an alliance with Casimir IV of Poland-Lithuania to preserve Novgorod's independence. After Ivan III defeated Novgorod at the Shelon in 1471 and annexed it in 1478, she was arrested and her estates were confiscated. She became a symbol of Novgorod's liberty.
