Maurice was Duke and then Elector of Saxony of the Albertine line. Though Lutheran, he sided with Emperor Charles V in the Schmalkaldic War and in 1547 received the electoral title taken from his Ernestine cousin. In 1552 he turned against Charles, forcing the Peace of Passau, and he was killed at the Battle of Sievershausen in 1553.
