Maximilian von Montgelas

1759–1838 · 19th century · Also known as Count Montgelas

Maximilian von Montgelas was a Bavarian statesman who, as chief minister of Maximilian IV Joseph, later King Maximilian I, from 1799 to 1817, created the modern Bavarian state. Allied with Napoleon, he greatly enlarged Bavaria's territory and saw it become a kingdom in 1806, then centralised the administration, secularised monasteries, curbed noble privileges and introduced religious toleration. His reforms prepared the way for the constitution of 1818.
