Melbourne
Melbourne is the capital of Victoria and the second-largest city of Australia, on Port Phillip Bay at the mouth of the Yarra River. Founded in 1835 by settlers from Van Diemen's Land, it boomed after the gold rushes of the 1850s to become one of the largest cities of the British Empire. It served as the seat of the federal government from 1901 until Canberra replaced it in 1927.
