South Wales
South Wales is the southern part of Wales, including Cardiff, Swansea, Newport and the industrial valleys. From the nineteenth century its coalfield and its iron and steel works made it one of the most industrialised regions of Britain; the collapse of coal exports brought mass unemployment between the wars, and its deep coal mines had all closed by the 2000s.
