South Yemen

1967–1990 · 20th century · Also known as People's Democratic Republic of Yemen

South Yemen, from 1970 the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen, was the state formed in southern Arabia when Britain withdrew from Aden and the South Arabian protectorates in November 1967. Ruled by the Marxist Yemeni Socialist Party, it was the only communist state in the Arab world and was closely allied with the Soviet Union. Weakened by the civil war of 1986, it united with North Yemen in 1990.
