Michelin

1889 · 19th century

Michelin is a French tyre manufacturer founded in 1889 by the brothers André and Édouard Michelin in Clermont-Ferrand. It pioneered detachable pneumatic tyres and published the Michelin guides. From the 1920s the company owned large rubber plantations in Cochinchina, where harsh conditions for workers recruited from northern Vietnam led to strikes and became a target of nationalist and communist organising.
