Mirgissa

Also known as Iken

Mirgissa was a large Egyptian fortress of the Middle Kingdom at the Second Cataract of the Nile in Lower Nubia, probably the Iken of Egyptian texts. Built in the Twelfth Dynasty, it had a mud-brick slipway for dragging boats past the rapids and served as a trading post with Nubia. Excavated by a French mission in the 1960s, it now lies under Lake Nasser.
