Mthethwa Paramountcy

late 18th century–c. 1818 · 18th century · Also known as Mthethwa Empire

The Mthethwa Paramountcy was a Nguni state near the coast of what is now KwaZulu-Natal, which under Dingiswayo dominated neighbouring chiefdoms, including the Zulu, in the early 19th century. It competed with the Ndwandwe for land, cattle and the Delagoa Bay trade. After Dingiswayo's death around 1818 its followers were absorbed into Shaka's Zulu Kingdom.
