Muhammadu Makau

19th century · 19th century

Muhammadu Makau was the last Hausa king of Zazzau (Zaria) before the Fulani jihad. When the jihadists took Zaria in 1808, he fled south with his followers to Zuba and kept up a successor state. After his death his brother Abu Ja (Jatau) built a new walled town around 1828 that took his name, Abuja, later borrowed for Nigeria's capital.
