11th–18th century · 11th century · Also known as March to the South, southward expansion

Nam tiến, the "southward advance", is the name for the expansion of Vietnamese rule and settlement from the Red River delta down the coast over several centuries. It proceeded at the expense of Champa, especially after the conquest of Vijaya in 1471, and was continued by the Nguyễn lords into the Mekong delta, giving Vietnam its present elongated shape.
