Naviglio Grande

1177–1272 · 12th century

The Naviglio Grande is a canal in Lombardy, about 50 km long, that carries water from the Ticino to Milan. Begun in the late twelfth century as an irrigation channel and made navigable in the thirteenth, it irrigated the surrounding plain and brought marble for Milan Cathedral to the city. It is the oldest of the Navigli, the canal network that linked Milan with Lake Maggiore, Lake Como and the Po.
