Navigation Acts

The Navigation Acts were a series of English laws from the mid-seventeenth century that restricted colonial trade to English ships and English ports. Aimed in large part at Dutch commercial dominance, they were a cornerstone of English mercantilism. They helped build the shipping, trade and fiscal base on which the early British Empire grew.
