Ndembu people
The Ndembu, or Southern Lunda, are a people of north-western Zambia and neighbouring parts of Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their chiefdoms, headed by senior titles such as Kanongesha, were founded by Lunda nobles who moved south from the court of the Mwata Yamvo in the 18th century. They became widely known through the anthropologist Victor Turner's studies of their rituals in the 1950s.
