Neleus (son of Codrus)

Also known as Neleus of Miletus

Neleus, son of the Athenian king Codrus, was the legendary founder of Miletus. Greek tradition held that after his father's death he quarrelled with his brother over the kingship and led a party of Ionian settlers across the Aegean around 1000 BCE. Herodotus reports that the first settlers killed the Carian men of the district and married their women. Neleus was honoured as founder and his descendants were said to have ruled the city.
