New Phocaea

Also known as Yeni Foça

New Phocaea, today Yeni Foça in western Turkey, was a fortified town on the Aegean coast founded by the Genoese Zaccaria family in the late 13th century to protect the nearby alum mines. Alum made it one of the most valuable Genoese possessions in the east. It passed to the Genoese maona of Chios in 1346 and fell to the Ottomans in 1455.
