Nizari–Musta'li schism

1094 · 11th century · Also known as 1094 succession crisis

The Nizari–Musta'li schism was the division of the Ismaili Shi'a community following a succession crisis in the Fatimid Caliphate in 1094. The vizier al-Afdal bypassed the designated heir Nizar in favour of al-Musta'li, and the Nizari faction broke away. The split destroyed the universal authority of the Fatimid missionary organisation and weakened the caliphate.
