Nizari Ismaili state
The Nizari Ismaili state was a network of mountain fortresses in Iran and Syria governed by the Nizari branch of Ismaili Shi'ism, centred on Alamut in the Alborz mountains from the late eleventh century. It resisted larger powers for over a century. Hulagu destroyed it in 1256 by capturing Alamut, before advancing on Baghdad to found the Ilkhanate.
