19th century · 19th century

Okukenu was the first ruler recognised as Alake of the united Egba at Abeokuta, in south-western Nigeria, installed in 1854. A leading chief of the town, he was chosen to give the many Egba townships a single paramount ruler, while each kept its own chiefs. His reign saw growing ties with Christian missionaries and with the British at Lagos.
