Palazzo Vecchio

1299 · 13th century · Also known as Palazzo della Signoria

The Palazzo Vecchio is the town hall of Florence, built from 1299 as the seat of the Signoria, probably to designs by Arnolfo di Cambio. Its fortress-like mass and tall tower dominate the Piazza della Signoria. Cosimo I de' Medici lived there before moving to the Palazzo Pitti, and its interiors were redecorated under Giorgio Vasari; it has again been Florence's city hall since 1872.
