Pedro de la Gasca

1493–1567 · 16th century

Pedro de la Gasca was a Spanish priest and royal official sent to Peru in 1546 to end the rebellion of Gonzalo Pizarro. Offering pardons and the repeal of the harshest New Laws, he won over most rebels, defeated Pizarro at Jaquijahuana in 1548 and had him executed, then reorganised the colony before returning to Spain, where he became bishop of Palencia and later of Sigüenza.
