c. 340–c. 285 BCE · 4th century BCE · Also known as Philetas of Cos

Philitas of Cos was a Greek poet and scholar of the early Hellenistic age, born on Kos around 340 BCE. He was tutor to the future Ptolemy II Philadelphus and is regarded as the first poet-scholar of the Hellenistic period, writing elegies and a glossary of rare words. Later poets such as Theocritus and Callimachus admired him, but only fragments of his work survive.
