Phocion

c. 402–318 BCE · 4th century BCE

Phocion was an Athenian statesman and general, elected general forty-five times, known for his austere honesty. He helped relieve Byzantium against Philip II of Macedon in 340 BCE but generally urged accommodation with Macedon. After Athens fell under Macedonian control he led its government, and when democracy was briefly restored in 318 BCE he was condemned and executed by hemlock.
