Port Phillip District

1836–1851 · 19th century

The Port Phillip District was an administrative district of the colony of New South Wales covering present-day Victoria, from 1836 to 1851. Centred on Melbourne, it was governed from 1839 by a superintendent, Charles La Trobe. Its settlers campaigned for separation from Sydney, and in July 1851 it became the separate colony of Victoria.
