Pratap Singh of Satara

1793–1847 · 19th century · Also known as Pratapsinh Bhosale

Pratap Singh was a descendant of Shivaji and nominal Chhatrapati of the Marathas under the Peshwas. After defeating Peshwa Baji Rao II in 1818, the British set him up as Raja of a small kingdom at Satara to win Maratha support. Accused of intrigue, he was deposed and exiled in 1839, and Satara was annexed in 1848.
