Prester John
Prester John was a legendary Christian priest-king believed in medieval Europe to rule a powerful realm in the East. The story spread after Bishop Hugh of Jabala told the papal court in 1145 that he had defeated the Muslims of Persia, a garbled echo of the Qara Khitai victory over Sultan Sanjar at Qatwan in 1141. A forged letter in his name circulated from about 1165, and the legend was later attached to the Mongols and to Christian Ethiopia.
