Princess Wencheng

d. 680 · 7th century

Princess Wencheng was a member of the Tang imperial clan who was sent to Tibet in 641 as a bride for the royal house of Songtsen Gampo, sealing peace with the emperor Taizong after a Tibetan attack on the Tang frontier. Tibetan tradition credits her with bringing the Jowo statue of the Buddha now in the Jokhang, and she became a lasting symbol of Sino-Tibetan relations.
