Bhrikuti

7th century · 7th century · Also known as Bhrikuti Devi

Bhrikuti is the Nepalese princess who, according to Tibetan tradition, married the emperor Songtsen Gampo in the seventh century, alongside the Tang princess Wencheng. Tradition credits her with bringing Buddhist images to Tibet and with a part in founding the Jokhang temple in Lhasa, and she is revered as an emanation of Green Tara. Her historicity is debated, as she is absent from the earliest sources.
