Yarlung Tsangpo
The Yarlung Tsangpo is the upper course of the Brahmaputra, flowing eastwards across southern Tibet for more than 1,000 km before cutting through the eastern Himalaya into India. Its valley and those of its tributaries, with Lhasa and Shigatse, have long been the agricultural and political heartland of Tibet, and the Yarlung kings who founded the Tibetan Empire rose in a side valley south of the river.
