Prussian coup of 1932

1932 · 20th century · Also known as Preußenschlag

The Prussian coup of 20 July 1932, the Preußenschlag, was the removal of the Social Democratic-led government of the Free State of Prussia by Chancellor Franz von Papen, using an emergency decree of President Hindenburg. Papen took control as Reich commissioner for Prussia, removing a key defender of the Weimar Republic and easing the Nazi seizure of power. The Constitutional Court ruled it partly unlawful in October 1932.
