Qal'at Ja'bar
Qal'at Ja'bar is a medieval castle on a hill beside the Euphrates in northern Syria, now an island in Lake Assad. Held by the Uqaylid dynasty in the 11th century, it was where the Turkish ruler Zengi was murdered by a servant in 1146 while besieging it. Its surviving walls largely date from rebuilding by Nur al-Din in the 12th century and later restorations.
