Rædwald of East Anglia

d. c. 624 · 7th century · Also known as Raedwald of East Anglia

Rædwald was king of East Anglia in the early 7th century and by 616 the most powerful king in southern England, named by Bede among the overlords of the English. In 616 he defeated and killed Æthelfrith of Northumbria at the River Idle, placing Edwin on the Northumbrian throne. He is widely thought to be the man commemorated by the great ship burial at Sutton Hoo.
