Rand Revolt
The Rand Revolt was an armed uprising of white mineworkers on the Witwatersrand in 1922, sparked by mine owners' plans to cut costs by employing more black workers in semi-skilled jobs. Strikers organised in commandos seized parts of Johannesburg in March, and Jan Smuts's government declared martial law and crushed the revolt with troops, artillery and aircraft; more than 150 people died. Its political cost helped bring Hertzog's Pact government to power in 1924.
