Red Fort

1639–1648 · 17th century

The Red Fort is the walled palace complex of the Mughal emperors in Delhi, built of red sandstone for Shah Jahan between 1639 and 1648 as the centre of his new city of Shahjahanabad. After 1857 the British occupied it, and in 1945–1946 it was the scene of the trials of officers of the Indian National Army. The Prime Minister of India raises the national flag there each Independence Day.
