Republicanism

Also known as republican

Republicanism refers to the political idea that the state should be a public matter governed by citizens or their representatives rather than by a hereditary monarch. It shaped the founding traditions of the Roman Republic that preceded the Roman Empire and resurfaced powerfully in modern Europe and the Americas. The profiles of the French Empire and the Brazilian Empire show republican movements challenging and ultimately replacing imperial monarchy, and the concept is also invoked in discussing the Rashidun Caliphate's decline.
